Don't forget that a lot of holidays plants are dangerous to pets! If you don't use a fake tree, consider getting one- because pine is dangerous for dogs and cats!
Pine needles are sharp and cats like to chew on them- they're poisonous and can cut the mouth and inside of the stomach if ingested. Pine sap is also extremely sticky and can clump up fur pretty terribly. The water that the trees sit in resemble a bowl of water to your pets, but it contains all kinds of pine byproducts like tar and are a quick way to get a sick pet.
Mistletoe is a very outdated Christmas accessory, but if you are using mistletoe, don't use REAL mistletoe. Not only is it dangerously poisonous for people- but also for your pets.
Poinsettias are also on the list of toxic holiday plants-and it is not for their red color. The sap it produces is toxic, not enough to be worried about your cats and dogs- but if you own small birds or reptiles the danger can be much more severe. Poinsettia sap is also irritating to human skin- just another reason to either put this plant up high out of reach, or to not buy one at all.
