I think none of us expected 2020 to go the way that it did, and now I'm back again this year for more updates.
The game took kind of a nap while in the background me and Tony were figuring out what to do. Eventually Tony disappeared and I wasn't sure where to go from there because the changes Tony had made were too big for me to swallow. He helped a lot with issues like the hackers by rerouting the games server to pass through his personal one. Once his server went offline I knew I had an important decision to make.
I don't know where Tony went and we definitely didn't have any bad issues going on between us, so I can only assume he's missing for health reasons and without knowing when he will be back, I have a duty to the great community of CS so I must continue on!
This next update is going to be part rollback to December 2019 plus some stuff I worked on on my own last year. THANKFULLY I made a backup of the game before Tony started working on the game with me so I have a nice place to start from where I understand every script.
I went into it on Discord, but I'm basically focusing on restoring playability of this version first and foremost so any small bugs or major changes will be on the back burner until this version is up and playable for everyone again. Data will be the same, no rollbacks there so no worries about losing characters since the last time you played.
It feels amazing to be able to work on CS again, and I hope you guys are excited about being able to play again.
What is the Rollback Update? Well it has 3 stages!
The first is reconfiguring. Making sure all old data is able to be read and processed by the half old half new back end and front end of the game. (I think I've completed this!)
The second is cleaning. Finding old scripts that don't need to be in the game and deleting them, taking often used scripts and streamlining them, and overall increasing FPS and lowering lag time as much as possible. This includes adding more errors and failing faster, so there's no weird errors that just hang your game or UI- it'll tell you immediately something went wrong.
The last stage is preparing. Making new scripts or changing old scripts to fit for future updates of the game. I'm also going to make sure that anytime a major update releases I have a backup that I can easily hotfix inbetween working on huge sections of game. It wasn't something I did properly when Tony and I worked together and now it's a top priority to ensure months don't go by without an update.
I would also like to maybe have an update schedule, I make so many small fixes between patches that if I could, in between large updates, push a weekly hotfix when the game is much more stable, you guys would have more comfort with the progress of the game knowing that 'hey this friday is another update'.
This is my first time doing this I think its important to get some thoughts out really quick at the end of my work hour for today.
How do I define success in this moment? It used to be- getting players online, getting people seeing my game, seeing people’s characters. I feel like I am at a standstill right now. But I know what I want.
I’m defining the next step of success for CS as it stands right now as: Getting 100 people on again, hitting that server limit No one crashes, the amount of bugs is minimal if any People getting excited about the future of the game again
I think these three things are kind of HUGE goals for me, but do-able ones. Right now I’m not adding any features, I’m just fixing what I need to and removing, really.
I am excited for the potential of this rework, but I’m also not holding my breath on any community based goals. I know I can personally get to the point of no bugs/minimal bugs. But will the community be ready and patient for me?
